Salutatorian Speech for the Class of 2012

What Defines Success?

To many the word success means obtaining the most money, having a new car, or having the biggest house, yet success is one of the few words in the dictionary that does not have a definition. The term success has a variety of different meanings, but you are the one who makes your definition.

Success is something that we all here today have encountered. We have won awards, are about to win awards, made our families proud, but most of all we have made it. This is the most important factor of success. We have made it through this four year long journey, not to say that it was easy but we did it. All of the hours of hard work, dedication, and staying focused, we put up with all of that and are here today. Congratulations! Sometimes in shop it seemed as if we could never take another day of it. Remember the long days of academics that you wished would fly by so you could go back to never never land like Mrs. Pacheco told us. No matter how you put it, we made it.

We have gone from walking into this gym knowing possibly a few people to becoming the seniors of the building. Do you remember those four years ago? Exploring all of the different shops and making friends with some of the people who are your best friends today. Remember being scared of not knowing how it would turn out here, or not knowing if you would fit in? Yet now we are all different now, we all have grown up, educated ourselves, and have learned what it means to earn our stripes.

One of the best forms of success is our Diman education. That is the one thing that will make us who we are as a family. Here in this building we surpass the education that our local schools give and we have seen that.

Let me take a moment to thank all of the administrators, teachers, faculty, and staff for helping us throughout this journey of high school. Let’s thank them for the relentless amount of hours they took out of being with their families and friends to be helping us with our dreams, education, and ambitions. If it wasn’t for them we wouldn’t be who we are today, and for that I thank you.

Thinking back through the years I know how fortunate that I was to come to Diman. I can still think back to winning my Gold National Medal at skills and thinking how amazing it was that a small school in Massachusetts produced someone that was able to be the best in the country.

Moments like that make me proud, proud of my education, proud of myself, proud of my colleagues, but most importantly part of my Diman family.

Graduation is something that is to be looked upon as a major accomplishment in your life. We will only graduate from high school once yet some of us are dying for it to be over already. Take it in and enjoy what graduation has to offer. Graduating this year you are leaving most of your friends to go out into the real world, but don’t be scared. No matter what, we will always be part of something bigger than anything, and that's our successful Bengal family.

Thank you.
